Brandable Box is proud to announce a partnership with sister company GreenBox, a New York based company dedicated to improving wasteful, outdated food packaging designs and to making consumers’ lives easier while bettering the environment. Brandable Box will offer both the original GreenBox pizza box and the option to print your logo on the GreenBox pizza box.
The GreenBox pizza box is an eco-friendly, kraft brown pizza box made from 100% recycled material. As seen on ABC’s Shark Tank, GreenBox is a multi-functional pizza box that easily transforms into four plates and a storage container for leftovers. Named one of Time Magazine’s “best inventions of 2009,” and the “Swiss Army knife of pizza boxes” by New York Daily News, GreenBox eliminates the need for wasteful materials like paper plates, aluminum foil, plastic wrap and more.
GreenBox pizza box successes
In 2014, the GreenBox team made an appearance on ABC’s Shark Tank. In that same year, the company’s video of Walsh demonstrating how to use and reuse the GreenBox pizza box went viral. Today, this video has more than 7 million views on YouTube.
Since then, the company has been featured in several publications, magazines, televisions shows, news outlets and more.
Environmental impact of the GreenBox pizza box
Each year in the United States, around 3 billion pizza boxes are sold. Of these 3 billion, around 2 billion are transported in cardboard boxes, which eventually make their way into landfills. This translates into 674,614,000 pounds of cardboard boxes.
The GreenBox pizza box is made from 100% recycled materials, and is produced by Brandable Box and GreenBox’s parent company Pratt Industries, the world’s largest, privately-held producer of 100% recycled containerboard.
By producing 100% recycled materials in-house, Pratt Industries saves 85,000 trees, 35 million gallons of water, and over 5,000 tons of greenhouse emissions each and every day.
Reusable pizza box beginnings
GreenBox was founded in 2009 by Jennifer Wright-Laracy, Ned Kensing and creator William Walsh. In college, Walsh enjoyed chowing down on a slice of pie together with his fraternity brothers. In true college student fashion, Walsh began tearing off pieces of the pizza box to use as a plate as dirty dishes piled up around. It turned out that was only the beginning of GreenBox.
Walsh never understood why the bottom of pizza boxes were useless. Taking things upon himself, he set to work with an x-acto knife and a few pizza boxes. 100 pizza boxes and four days later, Walsh had the beginnings of the GreenBox pizza box. He knew it was going to change the pizza game and the world.
Walsh enlisted the help of his best friends, Ned, a former chef, and Jennifer, who spent her career in finance. Together, the trio worked to make GreenBox a reality. In late 2011, the GreenBox team lost their best friend, business partner and GreenBox creator, William Walsh. He is dearly missed and his legacy will carry on.
Today, GreenBox works with distributors such as Sysco, Gordon Food Service and SPC. The GreenBox pizza box is used by restaurants such as The Cheesecake Factory, Two Boots Pizza and many more.
