The holiday forecasts are in, and three different research firms have predicted that holiday sales will increase sharply year over year. Bain and Deloitte are predicting that sales in November and December will increase by 7% compared to a year ago, reaching $800 billion. And Mastercard SpendingPulse is predicting that sales will increase by up to 7.4% compared to the year before.

At the same time, the shipping and logistics industry is maneuvering global supply chain delays brought on by COVID-19, labor shortages, and high demand that are expected to continue into 2022.

Recently, the USPS announced a temporary suspension for plans to reduce the added 1-2 business days to its package delivery timing. This 1-2 day addition had originally been implemented in April 2020 for Priority Mail and First Class Package Service delivery times. USPS planned to bring these service level times back down by 1-2 business days, but will now keep these in place until after this year’s holiday season.

These global supply chain and shipping delays coupled with an increase in consumer demand are putting a strain on the logistics industry that will pass down to consumers.

With these stats and shipping delays in mind, it’s more important than ever this year to be aware of shipping cutoff dates for the holidays so you can set expectations with your customers. This expectation setting includes being transparent with customers about any other delays they can expect when shopping with you.

Keep these carrier holiday deadlines in mind as the last possible day to ship in order for packages to arrive by Christmas, and keep in mind that shipping delays could add a few days to these cutoff dates. The earlier your customers shop, the earlier they can expect their packages to arrive.
